Actress Beauty Tip #6: Soft Doris Day skin

This is the sixth installment of our monthly classic actress beauty tips that I have read about AND tested.

Doris Day was the quintessential girl next door with a sunny smile, blonde hair and flawless skin.

How did Doris Day keep her skin so smooth and clear looking?

In her autobiography “Doris Day: Her Own Story,” Day said that once a month she would cover her body with Vaseline before she went to bed to soften her skin. She would wear gloves, sock and pajamas that would make sure the Vaseline stayed on her skin and didn’t get all over her bed.

I haven’t specifically used Vaseline, but I have used coco butter on my skin over night which is a similar consistency.  I’ve had issues with dry knees, ankles and elbows and the coco butter worked relatively well.

However, over coco butter, I’ve found that baby oil and Nivea work best for softening skin over night.

To review: I haven’t used Vaseline overly much but I’m substituting coco butter for my experiment. It moisturizes well but Nivea and baby oil work much better.

  1. DD was a real beauty, for sure. Good you are keeping people informed about her via your blog.

Check blond v. blonde in AP Stylebook.

(I have a boring life, dearest.)

  2. Doris is still beautiful at the age of 88 so it must work. I can’t imagine trying to sleep covered in vaseline though.

  3. Just wanted to let you know I’m REALLY enjoying these tips and even went out to buy Nivea and a jar of old fashioned Ponds. My grandmother used Ponds all her life and had skin so velvety soft into her 90’s. I can also attest to the effectiveness of Vaseline. It works.

    • I’m so glad you enjoy them! I wondered if anyone ever tried them out so now I know! That’s great to hear about the Ponds. I try to remember to use it every night before bed but sometimes I forget. Hopefully you can find other helpful/interesting beauty tips in months to come 🙂

  4. i wish when you hear these tips that they mentioned for the face what was used. This Vaseline tip does not mention the face…I wonder if she would have slathered the face as well. Doris Day had youthful cheeks and looks for many years beyond most women.

    • I’m not sure if she used Vaseline on her face.
I get the impression that she did though since in her book it says that she put it all over.
I do agree, I would like to know how they kept their skin so clear because my skin breaks out and wish mine was as clear as theirs.

  5. I used vaseline on my babies bottoms as my mum did for us…. then it was suggested I used the newer stuff on the market at the time… Valeline was best.
I have been playing with mixing Vaseline with Virgin Coconut oil for my skin, & trying to work out the ratio at the moment.
