Musical Monday: Hold That Co-Ed (1938)

It’s no secret that the Hollywood Comet loves musicals.
In 2010, I revealed I had seen 400 movie musicals over the course of eight years. Now that number is over 600. To celebrate and share this musical love, here is my weekly feature about musicals.

Plot:
Former all-American football player Rusty Stevens (Murphy) gets his first job as a football coach at State College. Upon arriving, the school’s president (Meek) informs Rusty and the students that Governor Gabby Harrington (Barrymore) has just outlawed football, deeming it an unnecessary expense to the tax players. The college students show up to protest, and when Gov. Harrington’s senate opponent, Major Breckenridge (Barbier), criticizes his college stances, Gov. Harrington pours money into the State College football program. While the football players aren’t very skilled, their secret weapon is Lizzie Olson, who is unmatched at her football kicking.

Plot:
The agents of Kay Kyser (himself) and John Barrymore (himself) hatch a plan to connect the bandleader to the Shakespearean actor to help boost Barrymore’s career. The idea is that Kyser will recite Shakespeare with Barrymore, much to Barrymore’s chagrin.

Watching 1939: Midnight (1939)

In 2011, I announced I was trying to see every film released in 1939. This new series chronicles films released in 1939 as I watch them. As we start out this blog feature, this section may become more concrete as I search for a common thread that runs throughout each film of the year. Right now, that’s difficult.

Plot:
Eve Peabody (Colbert) is a penniless chorus girl, stranded in Paris with only the evening gown she’s wearing. Eve is helped by taxi driver Tibor Czerny (Ameche), but she leaves him and sneaks into a ritzy party. She meets Georges Flammarion (Barrymore) who suspects she’s an imposter, and hires Eve to break up the romance between his wife (Astor) and her lover (Lederer).

Watching 1939: The Great Man Votes (1939)

This new series chronicles films released in 1939 as I watch them. As we start out this blog feature, this section may become more concrete as I search for a common thread that runs throughout each film of the year. Right now, that’s difficult.

Plot:
Gregory Vance (Barrymore) was a Harvard graduate and successful college professor. But after his wife died, he became an alcoholic and now works as a nightwatchman, caring for his two children, Joan (Weidler) and Donald (Holden). Joan and Donald still believe their father is a great man. When a political giant, Iron Hat McCarthy (MacBride) is trying to win the election for mayor, Vance is finally treated as a great man when the political machine realizes he holds the deciding vote for the election.
