Musical Monday: Meet the Navy (1946)

It’s no secret that the Hollywood Comet loves musicals.
In 2010, I revealed I had seen 400 movie musicals over the course of eight years. Now that number is over 600. To celebrate and share this musical love, here is my weekly feature about musicals.

Meet the Navy (1946) – Musical #827

Lionel Murton, Margaret Hurst, John Pratt, Robert Goodier, Phyllis Hudson, Percy Haynes, Bill Oliver, Jeanette De Hueck, Oscar Natzke

Plot:
The story toggles between a Canadian Navy ship and the stage where performers are staging a show to entertain the troops. In addition to the rehearsals, the story shows the signaling of the end of the war, and antics of sailors trying to sing their song on film. The film ends with a Royal Command Performance.

Plot:
Peter Carlton (Young) is a gossip columnist who invents the glamorous Mrs. Smythe-Smythe, a noble Englishwoman that no one has ever met. Elaine Bradford (Matthews), who happens to be in love with Peter, is a struggling performer who poses as Mrs. Smythe-Smythe to get ahead in her career. Peter doesn’t tell Elaine that Mrs. Smythe-Smythe is a phony.

Plot:
Michael Gore-Brown (Wilding) is a broke aristocrat who inherits the fancy lady’s dress shop in the fashionable neighborhood, Mayfair. Michael is planning to sell the shop until he meets and falls in love with the shop’s owner and designer Eileen (Neagle). He tries to run the shop on his own but realizes he needs Eileen to compete with another sophisticated shop owner, D’Arcy Davenport (Graves).
